What is JLPT?

 

JLPT or the Japanese Language Proficiency Test is held worldwide to evaluate and certify proficiency in Japanese of non-native speakers, covering language knowledge, reading and listening ability.

There are 5 different proficiency test levels from the highest (N1) to the lowest (N5). It is held twice a year in July and December

Test Levels

There are 5 test levels, ranging from the highest N1 to lowest N5.

See description for each Level.

You may do a simple self check here.

Test Contents

N1 & N2: there are 2 sections/paper
N3, 4 & 5: there are 3 sections/papers

When and Where

Twice a year – July & December

July & December Paper: Kuala Lumpur & Penang
December Paper only: Ipoh, Johore Bahru & Kota Kinabalu

Registration

The registration period is about 10-14 days.

July paper: sometimes between mid March and early April

December paper: sometimes between Mid Aug and early September

However, please check with its announcement around first week of March and August.

Registration in Malaysia and the fees payment is done online via jlpt.jlsm.org

No.

Yes, but there will be NO refund of any fees paid.

There is NO perquisite requirement. You may register for any level you are comfortable with.
